AI customer service software uses AI agents to answer customers and, in the better cases, to actually resolve their requests: checking an order, changing a booking, issuing a refund through your systems, or qualifying a lead. The category has matured fast, and the headline features now look similar on every vendor's homepage. Two differences still separate the tools in practice.

The first is whether the AI resolves or deflects. Deflection means the bot replies with a help article link and the customer does the work, or gives up. Resolution means the customer's problem is gone at the end of the conversation.

The second is how you pay for it. AI customer service platforms now bill in at least five different ways: per resolution, per outcome, per session, per credit, or a flat plan. At the same volume, those models can produce very different monthly bills.

This guide compares 11 AI customer service tools through both lenses. Bund AI is our product; we've included it and been direct about where it falls short. If you want the broader overview of the category first, read our earlier guide to the best AI customer support software. Competitor pricing was verified on each vendor's official site. Pricing as of September 2026.

How we chose

We included tools whose AI talks directly to customers (not just agent-assist) and evaluated them on:

  • Resolution ability: can the AI take actions in your systems, or only answer?
  • Grounding: does it answer from your own knowledge and cite sources?
  • Handoff: does a human receive the full context when the AI escalates?
  • Pricing model: the billing unit, published rates, and how predictable the monthly bill is.
  • Time to value: self-serve setup versus an enterprise implementation.

We only list prices we could confirm on vendor sites. Where pricing isn't public, we say so.

Resolve vs deflect: the question that matters most

Every AI customer service vendor reports a "resolution rate", but vendors define it differently. Some count a conversation as resolved if the customer didn't ask for a human. Others require the customer to confirm, or the AI to finish a task. Before comparing numbers, ask each vendor three questions:

  • What counts as a resolution? A customer who leaves frustrated also "didn't ask for a human".
  • Which actions can the AI take on its own? Look for concrete ones: track, cancel, reschedule, refund, update an address, book a meeting.
  • What happens at the edge? The AI should escalate with the full transcript, not loop the customer back to an article.

Tools that can act in your systems resolve more because many customer requests are tasks, not questions. "Where's my order?" needs a lookup. "Can I move my appointment?" needs a calendar change. Our guide on when AI should hand off covers the escalation side in detail.

The five AI pricing models, explained

  • Per resolution or outcome: you pay each time the AI resolves a conversation (Intercom Fin, Help Scout AI Answers, Zendesk, Gorgias). Fair in principle, but your bill rises as the AI gets better, and definitions of "resolved" vary.
  • Per session or conversation: you pay for each AI conversation, resolved or not (Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent, Salesforce Agentforce's per-conversation option).
  • Credits: AI actions draw down a credit balance tied to a wider platform (HubSpot, Salesforce Flex Credits).
  • Flat plan with an allowance: a fixed monthly price with a usage allowance (Bund AI). Easiest to budget, but check what the allowance counts.
  • Custom contracts: enterprise vendors (Sierra, Decagon, Ada) quote per deal, often on outcome-based terms.

What 1,000 AI-handled conversations a month costs

To make the models comparable, here's the AI portion of the bill for 1,000 conversations handled by AI in a month, using published rates. Seat costs, included allowances, and minimums come on top or reduce these figures, so treat this as a rough guide:

  • Intercom Fin: 1,000 outcomes at $0.99 is about $990, plus help desk seats if you use Intercom's inbox.
  • Help Scout AI Answers: 1,000 resolutions at $0.75 is about $750, plus seats.
  • Zendesk AI agents: after the included allowance (5 to 15 per agent per month), extra resolutions cost $1.50 each on commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, so up to roughly $1,500 to $2,000, plus seats.
  • Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent: after a one-time 500 sessions, $49 per 100 sessions works out to about $490, whether or not each session resolves, plus seats.
  • HubSpot Customer Agent: 50 credits per resolved conversation at $9 per 1,000 extra credits is roughly $450, before included credits, plus Professional seats and onboarding.
  • Salesforce Agentforce: $2 per conversation is about $2,000, or usage-based Flex Credits instead.
  • Bund AI: plans meter AI replies, not conversations. If your conversations average three AI replies, 1,000 conversations use about 3,000 replies, which fits the Growth plan at $99 a month including 10 seats.

The honest caveat on our own number: a reply allowance and a resolution price aren't the same unit. Long, multi-turn conversations use more replies. Check your average conversation length before comparing.

Which AI customer service platform should you choose?

  • You want a predictable bill and real actions on chat and email: Bund AI.
  • You're already on a help desk: start with its native AI (Intercom, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Help Scout, HubSpot) to avoid a migration, and price the AI unit carefully.
  • You're an ecommerce brand on Shopify: Gorgias.
  • You're an enterprise with voice needs and a large budget: Sierra, Decagon, Ada, or Agentforce.

Whatever you choose, run a pilot on real conversations and measure resolutions the way your customers would. Our AI vs human customer support guide helps decide which conversations to automate first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI customer service software? For small and mid-sized teams wanting flat pricing and action-taking on chat and email, Bund AI. For teams on an existing help desk, its native AI agent (Intercom Fin, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Help Scout, or HubSpot). For enterprises needing voice and custom builds, Sierra, Decagon, Ada, or Salesforce Agentforce.

How much does AI customer service software cost? Published per-resolution prices range from about $0.75 (Help Scout) to $0.99 (Intercom Fin) and $1.50 to $2.00 (Zendesk extras). Freshdesk charges $49 per 100 sessions. Flat plans like Bund AI's run $49 to $199 a month for 1,000 to 10,000 AI replies.

Is per-resolution pricing better than a flat plan? Per-resolution pricing ties cost to results, which is fair, but your bill rises as the AI improves and definitions of resolved vary. Flat plans are easier to budget. Compare both at your real volume and average conversation length.

What is the difference between resolving and deflecting a request? Deflecting sends the customer elsewhere, usually a help article. Resolving means the problem is gone when the conversation ends, often because the AI took an action such as tracking an order or rebooking an appointment.

Can AI customer service software handle phone calls? Some can. Sierra, Decagon, Ada, Salesforce Agentforce, and Intercom offer voice options. Bund AI works on web chat and email only and does not handle phone calls.

How long does it take to set up AI customer service software? Self-serve tools that learn from your existing help content can often go live within a day. Enterprise platforms usually involve weeks or months of implementation, integrations, and testing.
