An honest note on rich results

Google stopped showing the FAQ rich result from 7 May 2026, per the Google Search Central updates page (checked 1 October 2026). This markup now mainly makes your Q&A easier for machines to read. It will not add an expandable FAQ to your Google listing.

Worked examples

FAQ schema generator examples

Four inputs and what the tool does with each, including the escaping.

One question

A shop with a single shipping question.

Q: How long does shipping take? A: Orders arrive in 3 to 5 business days.

A script tag with type application/ld+json containing an FAQPage whose mainEntity holds one Question named "How long does shipping take?" and an acceptedAnswer with the text "Orders arrive in 3 to 5 business days."

Quotes in the text

An answer that contains double quotes.

A: Choose the "Pause" option in your account.

The quotes are escaped as \" in the JSON, so the markup stays valid and the answer reads the same.

HTML in an answer

An answer with a link.

A: See our <a href="/returns">returns page</a>.

The less-than sign is written as a unicode escape inside the JSON, so the tag can never end the script block early. Parsers read it back as the original HTML.

Incomplete row

You added a question but have not written the answer yet.

Q: Do you ship abroad? A: (empty)

The row is left out of the output, and the tool tells you how many rows were skipped, so you never publish a question with no answer.

Using FAQ schema well

How to add FAQ schema the right way

Short rules that keep your markup valid and honest.

01

Match the schema to the visible page

Mark up only questions and answers that readers can see on the same page. Hidden or mismatched markup goes against Google's structured data guidelines.

02

Write real questions with direct answers

Use the wording customers use, and answer in the first sentence. That helps people, and it gives search engines and AI assistants a clean answer to quote.

03

Use FAQPage for one answer per question

FAQPage is for pages where the site publishes the answers. If users can submit their own answers to a question, QAPage is the schema.org type for that.

04

Test the result

After you paste the script tag, run the page through the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org to confirm it parses without errors.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is FAQPage structured data from schema.org, written as JSON-LD. It describes the questions and answers on a page in a format machines can read directly, instead of leaving them to guess from the layout.
Will FAQ schema give me rich results in Google?
No. According to the Google Search Central updates page (checked on 1 October 2026), the FAQ rich result stopped appearing in Google Search from 7 May 2026, and Google removed its documentation in June 2026. The markup remains valid schema.org vocabulary, so it still helps machine readability for search engines and AI tools that parse structured data, but it does not unlock an expandable snippet.
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
It is valid, low-cost markup that describes your content clearly, and it does no harm when it matches what the page shows. Just don't expect a ranking boost or a rich result from it. The visible FAQ content is what matters most to readers.
Where do I paste the generated script tag?
Paste it into the HTML of the same page that shows the FAQs, usually in the head or just before the closing body tag. In a CMS, use a custom code or header field for that page.
Can I use HTML in my answers?
Google's documentation allows a small set of HTML tags in answers, such as links, lists, paragraphs and basic formatting. Plain text is the safest choice, and the tool escapes special characters either way.
Is anything I enter stored?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
